Everything to Know About Scribble in iPadOS 14

November 20, 2020

The Scribble feature offers a way of delivering smart content. Not only it recognizes the handwriting, but also the gestures. So, it supports and enhances the usage of the Apple Pencil. Scribble resolves the tedious task of editing or updating text. Scribble is now available in iPadOS 14 as a new feature.

The Working Principle

The touch sensor generates signals when you write anything using a stylus. The Data Detector and Machine learning algorithms understand the nature of the text. The nature of the text-data can be a phone number, names, dates, and addresses. As per the text-data, it may trigger the relevant action. For instance, after detecting the phone number, it can suggest call-action. Or, on getting the address, it may open the map to check the location. Also, the Smart Selection uses on-device machine learning to segregate handwriting from drawings. Shape Recognition technology gives perfection to geometrical shapes.

Other Features

  • Scribble offers support in English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, and a mixture of Chinese and English.
  • The handwritten text is secure and stored in a local device. So, it ensures the privacy of the user.

Scribble Supported Devices

Many Apple tablets support Scribble. But, one needs Apple Pencil to run Scribble. Any third-party will not be able to run Scribble. Some of the tablets that supports are:

  1. iPad Air
  2. iPad
  3. iPad Pro 12.9
  4. iPad Pro 11
  5. iPad Mini
  6. iPad Pro 10.5

Turning ON Scribble – Getting Started

  1. Search for the “Settings icon” on your device.
  2. Open the Settings.
  3. Scroll down to search for the Apple Pencil option.
  4. Select Apple Pencil.
  5. Set the toggle option to ON mode.
  6. A “Try Scribble” section will pop out with suggestions.

Once done, the Scribble features start working on your device. All one needs now is the Apple Pencil. To begin writing, use the Apple Pencil to touch within a section of an app where one writes the text. Once done with writing, the user should wait for a few seconds to let it convert to a computerized text. One should write a bit slow if the recognition of the characters fails.

Editing Text in Scribble

There may come a time when one needs to remove a particular part of the text. One can select the text by underlining it or making a circle around the word or phrase. Once done, it will highlight the chosen word or phrase. If one does not like the concept of circling or underlining, one can double-tap over the word or phrase. To join or separate the texts, one can draw a vertical line between the characters. To add space, one can tap and hold between words and then insert the text.

Using Scribble in Apple Notes

  1. Open the Notes by tapping the Notes icon.
  2. Select the Markup icon. It will bring the Markup toolbar.
  3. Tap on handwriting style by selecting the Handwriting tool. A pen will emerge with the letter A.

Start writing with an Apple Pencil. The written text gets converted into a computerized one.

Conclusion

The collaboration of Scribble and Apple Pencil enhances the writing style. With the adoption of ML algorithms, it delivers the perfect write-up through character recognition. The feature to add, insert, and delete text empowers the user to deliver better and smart content.
